Losing It With Jillian: A Self-Esteem Workout

In this week's "Losing It With Jillian," Jillian Michaels visited the Northern family from Goodlettsville, Tenn. After her pre-visit spy cam revealed the Northerns sitting down to a Southern dinner registering at over 14,000 calories, Jillian's mood turned south. The Northerns can say goodbye to their deep fryer filled with wings. No way will that meal fly on Jillian's watch.

Jillian Rides the Anger Edge. Upon witnessing the 14,000-plus calorie dinner, Jillian was "pissed." Deep fryer rage or not, this was an overreaction. Whether it's deep dish pizza or the Northern's deep-fried wings paired with fat-laden macaroni and cheese, no overeating family deserves that kind of first impression from their trainer.

Over Half Fat. Jillian ordered the Northerns to put down their wings, grab their workout clothes and head for a medical intervention with Dr. Van Herle. Turns out the patriarch of the family, Patrick, weighs 329 pounds compared to a healthy weight of 192 for his frame. Heading for a heart attack, he's also sporting high blood pressure and cholesterol. Mom Kim weighs 283 instead of a healthy weight of 139, and her body fat measured a shocking 53 percent. Interestingly, a medical assessment of their 14-year-old twins, Ameer and Ameera, was not broadcast. Makes sense -- the kids are already overwhelmed with fear their parents are headed for an early death.

Do You Stash Junk Food? After a first workout where Patrick repeatedly gave up, Jillian ordered a kitchen clean-up. Patrick revealed several spots he squirrels away sugary snacks, while Kim opened up her nightstand to reveal a bag of candy she sometimes raids for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Whether you're hiding treats from the kids or stashing the junk out of sight of your conscience, those easy carbohydrates will beckon if they're in the house. A truly clean kitchen doesn't include moon pies in secret hiding places. Toss 'em now.

Your Body Takes Orders. After collapsing and sliding off the end of the treadmill, Patrick claimed his leg gave out. Jillian didn't buy it. "You tell your body what you need it to do and it will do it," she told him. Stop listening to your body's uncertainty and start ordering it around. Jillian believes your gym mind can conquer all, provided you get to the root of your unhealthy eating and moving habits. But you have to wonder if someone will seriously be injured one of these days. Hurling off the end of a treadmill is a real risk.

Self-Esteem Makeover. Jillian discovered day one that Patrick's low self-esteem was literally weighing the family down. He was out of a job, unmotivated and emotionally shut down towards his wife. His apathy was tearing everyone apart. He was even too scared to dance. Jillian used brutal workouts and straight talk to unravel Kim in front of Patrick. The guy loves his wife and he then began to open up. Jillian's unique brand of trainer therapy occurs in a gym, not a couch.

Partner Training. After Patrick got honest with his feelings of failure, he began to feel success in the gym. That's when Jillian had him partner train with Kim. Get your workout relationship on even ground and switch off partner training with your mate. It's cheaper than personal training and empowers your relationship. Here are a few partner poses to stretch you farther.

Family Is Everything. As the week progressed, Patrick joined his family for an afternoon of rollerskating -- the first active fun the Northerns had enjoyed together in a long time. Make your next family night a moving one, not a movie night.

As the week wrapped up, Kim declared her goal to lose 30 pounds and have that 40-plus-one birthday party she'd avoided after failing again and again to lose weight. Jillian challenged her to lose 40 instead. Patrick vowed to communicate with his wife, take some of the pressure off of her and lose 60 pounds. Jillian didn't ratchet up that goal.

After eight weeks, Kim entered her surprise 40-and-change birthday party 41 pounds lighter and four dress sizes smaller. Patrick lost 61 pounds, four shirt sizes and whittled his waistline to 44 inches from a pre-Jillian 52. He's also working again and dancing. Ameer and Ameera look happy, healthy and relieved. To top it off, Jillian handed the Northerns $50,000 before heading out to her next assignment. See you next week as Jillian attempts her techniques on a morbidly obese teenage boy.
