Leavenworth, Kan. —
It has been well researched that the benefits of living with pet animals are many. Having a pet improves both our physical and emotional well being. This can be especially true for seniors.
Loneliness can be a factor in the lives of the elderly who often live alone. Depression and feelings of worthlessness can prevail. The presence of a pet can provide meaningful companionship and a purpose.
A pet is a dependant being who relies on their “person.”
A pet will mold itself to your schedule; they can be there for you in ways that people can’t.
Never questioning, always adoring and available for loving…on duty all the time. It is very satisfying to take care of another living creature. You are investing in another’s life.
Walking and exercising a dog leads to increased social interaction as well as providing more exercise.
Having a dog is a great way to making walking a part of your daily plan. All routines involving pet care bring structure and purpose to one’s life.
Owning, loving and caring for a pet has been proven to have a positive effect on one’s health and well being,
Stroking a pet will lower blood pressure and just having one in your life can keep blood pressure lower, even under stressful circumstances.
Pet owners have lower blood cholesterol levels in comparison to non pet owners thus having reduced risk of heart disease. After a serious illness, there is a higher survival rate for those who have pets.
Studies have shown that dog and cat owners have fewer doctors’ visits and require fewer medications for common illnesses.
The quality of family life is enhanced by having pets. Children have higher self esteem and develop a compassion for living things.
The potential for developing childhood allergies is lessened by growing up with pets in the home.
A dog can provide security and peace of mind especially for those who live alone. Potential thieves are more likely to stay away from a home with a barking dog. You don’t necessarily need a big dog, just a loud one.
No matter whether you are young or old, living alone or with an extended family, happy or sad, having a pet is an investment in life that will pay you back in a multitude of ways. You will be blessed with a creature who adores you with no strings attached, although they would like a warm nest, a bit of food, kind words and a soft lap. They too are looking for someone to love and who loves them unconditionally.
For most people the benefits of having a pet outweigh the drawbacks but there are things to consider when making this important decision. There are responsibilities that go with owning a pet.
You will be making a commitment to care for them for their life or need to have a reliable plan for their care if you are no longer able. Pets are not just for filling a temporary whim, to be discarded when they are no longer convenient.
For seniors a middle aged or older pet would be perfect. They are not so hyperactive, are usually well mannered and housebroken. A cat may be more suitable for situations where there is not enough time or desire to exercise a pet.
Right now there are many, many suitable adoptable dogs and cat at Leavenworth Animal Control.
Why not go down there and find your next companion. It will make your life happier and healthier!
